Home / First Chiropractic Visit
There are a lot of similar characteristics between the construction of a house and your first visit with a chiropractor. For example, when you are building a domicile, it would be silly to put up the siding on the sand. You need a solid foundation. These concepts apply to your body as well, and professional chiropractic care addresses many common areas correlated with people who experience pain and other health issues. There needs to be a diagnosis acting as the foundation of your visit, so we can rebuild a functioning property. With professional chiropractic care, your body must follow a building plan or “blueprint” of care, in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three phases in these building plans, of your experience and they are imperative to a successful experience.
If you are in pain when you come into our Gresham chiropractic office, our first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the underlying condition which is causing your pain, it is typical for a patient to need chiropractic care or adjustments 2-3 times per week for 4-12 weeks.
During the corrective phase of chiropractic care, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, which helps prevent further injury or pain. The goal of corrective or restorative chiropractic care is to help bring your body back to 100% functioning. It is typical to need chiropractic care or adjustments about 4-8 times per month for 6-24 months, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.
Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer experiencing back pain or other pain symptoms, it is important to come in for periodic chiropractic adjustments to avoid further problems in the future. Usually, this phase of chiropractic care only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor 1-4 times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.
Your first visit will include a warm welcome, consultation and complete body assessment and any necessary x-rays.
On your second visit, you’ll receive recommendations best-suited for you, a review of your x-rays (if applicable), and space to ask all your questions.
Experience hope and the power of chiropractic care as you move into a happy, healthy future feeling and healing better than ever before.
Upon entering our office, our receptionist will welcome you as a member of our family. We will request that you complete our patient forms located in the New Patient Center. This paperwork provides us with your health history and information on your condition.
Next, you will have a consultation with Mark Betsill, this initial consultation is designed for our chiropractors to learn more about you, your condition, and expectations to determine how chiropractic care can meet your goals.
After your consultation, Mark Betsill will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes, flexibility, and overall health. Other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical tests will be performed as well, however, nothing will be done during the examination without your full understanding and approval.
Depending on your specific condition, there is a potential that we may need to take X-rays. X-rays help us develop the most effective customized plan for you and will allow our professionals to know of any serious spinal conditions. Most people are amazed once they can fully see what ailment is plaguing them.
Once our professionals have collected and examined you and our findings, Mark Betsill will give you a detailed report of what was discovered and answer any questions including:
We want you to know you are in good hands and to do this, Dr. Betsill will present a personalized, expert care plan specific to you.
At the conclusion of this initial appointment, you will make the final determination of what to do for your first treatment. This may include effective adjustments, physical therapy, and/or muscle work. Treatments are entirely interactive, so you can ask questions about the different styles of treatment anytime.
Prior to leaving, the doctor will suggest a wellness program to incorporate outside of treatment. If you are in pain when you first come into our office this may include ice or heat application instructions, certain activities or positions to avoid, and at-home exercises and/or stretches. If you desire, our wellness team will work with you also to create healthy habits and routines for your lifestyle. Every person is unique; therefore, everyone requires a customized wellness plan. The purpose of our wellness program is for you to achieve good spinal alignment, have a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a positive mental state.

Dr. Mark Betsill is a dedicated chiropractor serving patients in Gresham with more than a decade of experience helping individuals move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health from Boise State University, where his interest in health and human performance first began to take shape.
After experiencing firsthand how chiropractic care helped him recover from an upper back injury that was affecting his golf game, Dr. Betsill discovered the path he wanted to pursue. He went on to attend Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.
Dr. Betsill focuses on helping patients recover from neck and back pain, sports injuries, postural stress, auto accident injuries, and workplace-related conditions. He uses gentle, effective techniques including manual adjustments, the Activator Method, and drop-table adjustments to address spinal misalignment and extremity dysfunction. He also has a special clinical interest in neck and lower back disc herniations, often combining chiropractic adjustments with computerized mechanical traction to improve pain relief, mobility, and function.
While many patients first visit because of pain, Dr. Betsill is passionate about helping them move beyond symptom relief. His goal is to help people improve functional movement, maintain spinal health, and support long-term wellness. He treats patients of all ages—including infants, children, teens, athletes, and pregnant women—and believes chiropractic care can play an important role in addressing not only spinal concerns, but also shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot discomfort.
Shortly before graduating in 2007, Dr. Betsill faced a personal health challenge that deeply shaped his philosophy of care. After multiple emergency room visits for dizziness, syncope, and chest pain, he began looking beyond symptoms alone. Through that experience, he came to better understand the effects of physical, chemical, and emotional stress on the body. By combining chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and proper nutrition, he restored his own health—an experience that continues to influence the way he cares for patients today.
Originally from northern Nevada and southern Idaho, Dr. Betsill grew up playing sports, with golf becoming a lifelong favorite. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Today, he and his wife and two sons enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not in the office, you’ll often find him on the course with the men’s club at Gresham Golf Course or staying active and fit with his family.
