Why Gresham’s Active Lifestyle Demands Chiropractic Care: Protecting Your Back, Neck, and Joints

Chiropractic

Gresham, Oregon, is known for its stunning natural surroundings, making it a hotspot for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing, and running. With so much to explore and enjoy, many locals take full advantage of the area’s beauty. However, this active lifestyle can put significant strain on your body, especially on the spine, neck, and joints. Whether you’re hiking up the scenic trails of Mount Hood or cycling through the lush parks, the physical toll of these activities can lead to common issues like back pain, sciatica, and even migraines. That’s where chiropractic care—particularly chiropractic decompression therapy—becomes crucial for maintaining spinal health, preventing injuries, and helping you stay active and pain-free. In this blog, we’ll discuss how chiropractic care can support your body and keep you at your best in Gresham’s outdoor paradise.

For those in Gresham who engage in sports or outdoor activities regularly, chiropractic care is an essential tool for injury prevention. Regular chiropractic adjustments help maintain spinal alignment, improve flexibility, and reduce the risk of injury by ensuring that your muscles and joints are working efficiently.

Chiropractic decompression therapy also plays a vital role in injury prevention by reducing pressure on the spine and preventing disc-related issues before they become problematic. Whether you’re training for a hike up Mount Hood or simply walking through the local parks, keeping your spine in optimal condition will allow you to perform at your best without the risk of overuse injuries.

The Importance of Chiropractic Care for Gresham’s Active Population

Whether you’re an avid hiker scaling Mount Hood or a cyclist enjoying the local trails, staying active is part of Gresham’s way of life. However, the physical demands of outdoor activities can cause strain, resulting in injuries or long-term damage to your spine, neck, and joints. Back pain, sciatica, and migraines are just a few examples of common conditions that can arise from overexertion or poor posture during physical activities.

Chiropractic care focuses on the alignment and health of the spine and musculoskeletal system, offering a natural approach to managing pain, preventing injuries, and supporting overall health. By using spinal adjustments, therapeutic exercises, and chiropractic decompression therapy, individuals can recover from injuries, prevent future pain, and improve their overall quality of life.

How Chiropractic Decompression Therapy Helps Prevent and Manage Back Pain

Chiropractic decompression therapy is one of the most effective treatments for managing back pain, particularly for those who lead an active lifestyle. Over time, repetitive movements from activities like hiking or biking can place pressure on the spinal discs, leading to conditions such as herniated discs or chronic back pain. Chiropractic decompression therapy gently stretches the spine, relieving pressure on the discs and allowing nutrients and oxygen to flow freely to the affected areas, promoting healing.

By decompressing the spine, this therapy can:

  • Relieve pain caused by herniated or bulging discs

  • Improve mobility and flexibility, which are crucial for outdoor activities

  • Reduce inflammation and promote the natural healing process

  • Prevent long-term spinal damage caused by repetitive physical stress

For active individuals in Gresham, chiropractic decompression therapy not only aids in recovery but also helps prevent injuries caused by overexertion or misalignment, allowing you to stay active and healthy.

Managing Migraines and Neck Pain Through Chiropractic Care

Another common concern for Gresham’s active population is migraine headaches and neck pain, which can occur due to muscle strain, poor posture, or stress from physical activities. Migraines are often linked to tension in the neck and upper back, making chiropractic care an effective solution for managing and preventing these types of headaches.

Chiropractic care for migraines typically involves spinal adjustments that relieve pressure on the nerves in the neck and upper spine, helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. By targeting the root causes of tension and misalignment, chiropractic care can reduce the severity of symptoms, allowing you to enjoy outdoor activities without the debilitating effects of chronic headaches.

In addition to spinal adjustments, therapeutic exercises and chiropractic decompression therapy can help alleviate neck pain and stiffness, improving your overall range of motion and comfort during physical activity.

Protecting Your Joints and Preventing Sciatica

Sciatica is another common issue for outdoor enthusiasts, especially for those who enjoy hiking or running. This condition occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back to the legs, becomes compressed or irritated, leading to pain, numbness, or tingling sensations in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.

Chiropractic decompression therapy is an excellent option for relieving sciatica, as it targets the lower back and helps to alleviate pressure on the nerve roots. By gently stretching the spine and decompressing the discs, chiropractic care can reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and provide significant pain relief.

Chiropractors also use other techniques, such as spinal adjustments and therapeutic exercises, to strengthen the muscles around the spine and improve flexibility, which can prevent sciatica from returning and help keep you active and injury-free.

Dr. Mark Betsill

Dr. Mark Betsill is a dedicated chiropractor serving patients in Gresham with more than a decade of experience helping individuals move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health from Boise State University, where his interest in health and human performance first began to take shape.

After experiencing firsthand how chiropractic care helped him recover from an upper back injury that was affecting his golf game, Dr. Betsill discovered the path he wanted to pursue. He went on to attend Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.

Dr. Betsill focuses on helping patients recover from neck and back pain, sports injuries, postural stress, auto accident injuries, and workplace-related conditions. He uses gentle, effective techniques including manual adjustments, the Activator Method, and drop-table adjustments to address spinal misalignment and extremity dysfunction. He also has a special clinical interest in neck and lower back disc herniations, often combining chiropractic adjustments with computerized mechanical traction to improve pain relief, mobility, and function.

While many patients first visit because of pain, Dr. Betsill is passionate about helping them move beyond symptom relief. His goal is to help people improve functional movement, maintain spinal health, and support long-term wellness. He treats patients of all ages—including infants, children, teens, athletes, and pregnant women—and believes chiropractic care can play an important role in addressing not only spinal concerns, but also shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot discomfort.

Shortly before graduating in 2007, Dr. Betsill faced a personal health challenge that deeply shaped his philosophy of care. After multiple emergency room visits for dizziness, syncope, and chest pain, he began looking beyond symptoms alone. Through that experience, he came to better understand the effects of physical, chemical, and emotional stress on the body. By combining chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and proper nutrition, he restored his own health—an experience that continues to influence the way he cares for patients today.

Originally from northern Nevada and southern Idaho, Dr. Betsill grew up playing sports, with golf becoming a lifelong favorite. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Today, he and his wife and two sons enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not in the office, you’ll often find him on the course with the men’s club at Gresham Golf Course or staying active and fit with his family.
