The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Sciatica Pain Relief

Sciatica Treatment Gresham OR

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, leading to discomfort, tingling, and numbness radiating from the lower back through the legs. Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical method that relieves this pain by gently stretching the spine to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve, promoting healing without the need for invasive treatments.

How Does Spinal Decompression Therapy Help with Sciatica Pain?

Spinal decompression therapy involves a controlled, gentle stretching of the spine that creates space between the vertebrae. This process relieves pressure on the discs, nerves, and muscles surrounding the spine, especially in the areas affected by sciatica.

By targeting misalignments and pressure on the sciatic nerve, spinal decompression helps increase blood flow and encourages the healing of damaged or irritated discs. For individuals seeking non-surgical spinal decompression in Gresham, this therapy offers a safe and effective alternative to invasive surgery or medication.

At Aspire Chiropractic, we offer spinal decompression therapy as part of our comprehensive treatment plans aimed at relieving sciatica and restoring mobility to our patients.

How Does Spinal Decompression Compare to Other Sciatica Treatments?

Traditional sciatica treatments often include pain medications, physical therapy, or in severe cases, surgery. However, these methods may not address the root cause of the pain. Spinal decompression therapy offers a non-invasive solution that targets the underlying issues of nerve compression by using gentle traction to relieve pressure on the discs and nerves in the spine.

Unlike medications, which mask the pain, spinal decompression works by promoting natural healing. While surgery can be effective, it carries inherent risks and a longer recovery time. Spinal decompression, on the other hand, is non-surgical and allows patients to avoid the risks associated with more invasive procedures.

What Are the Benefits of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy offers several benefits for sciatica pain relief, including:

  • Pain reduction: By alleviating pressure on the nerves and discs, decompression helps reduce sciatica pain and discomfort.
  • Improved spinal alignment: Spinal decompression helps improve the overall alignment of the spine, supporting long-term spinal health.
  • Faster recovery: As decompression promotes healing by increasing nutrient flow to damaged discs, it supports quicker recovery without the need for invasive treatments.
  • Increased mobility: Reducing pressure on the sciatic nerve allows for improved movement and flexibility, which is essential for daily activities.

This non-invasive treatment provides long-term benefits and is a great option for those who want to avoid surgery or medication. At Aspire Chiropractic, we focus on providing holistic treatments that help patients achieve lasting results.

When Should You Consider Chiropractic Care for Sciatica?

Chiropractic care, including spinal decompression therapy, is often recommended when sciatica pain becomes persistent or limits mobility. If you experience tingling, numbness, or severe pain in your lower back or legs, it may be time to explore chiropractic decompression therapy.

If you’ve already tried traditional treatments with limited success, or if you’re looking for a more natural and non-invasive approach, chiropractic care could be the answer. Chiropractic adjustments work alongside spinal decompression therapy to help align the spine and improve overall function, which can reduce sciatica symptoms.

How Long Does Spinal Decompression Therapy Take to Show Results?

The length of time it takes for spinal decompression therapy to show results can vary depending on the severity of the sciatica, the length of time symptoms have been present, and the individual’s overall health. However, many patients begin to feel relief after just a few sessions.

Most treatment plans involve several sessions over a span of weeks. During this time, your chiropractor will assess your progress and adjust the therapy as needed. Consistent treatment ensures that you receive maximum benefit from spinal decompression therapy and can lead to lasting results.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help Prevent Sciatica Pain from Returning?

Once sciatica pain has been relieved through spinal decompression therapy, maintaining proper spinal alignment is essential for long-term relief. Chiropractic adjustments can help ensure that the spine remains aligned, reducing the likelihood of nerve compression and recurrence of sciatica symptoms.

In addition to chiropractic care, lifestyle changes such as improving posture, avoiding prolonged sitting, and incorporating exercises to strengthen the back and core can support long-term spinal health. At Aspire Chiropractic, we provide patients with ongoing care strategies to help prevent the return of sciatica pain.

Dr. Mark Betsill

Dr. Mark Betsill is a dedicated chiropractor serving patients in Gresham with more than a decade of experience helping individuals move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health from Boise State University, where his interest in health and human performance first began to take shape.

After experiencing firsthand how chiropractic care helped him recover from an upper back injury that was affecting his golf game, Dr. Betsill discovered the path he wanted to pursue. He went on to attend Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.

Dr. Betsill focuses on helping patients recover from neck and back pain, sports injuries, postural stress, auto accident injuries, and workplace-related conditions. He uses gentle, effective techniques including manual adjustments, the Activator Method, and drop-table adjustments to address spinal misalignment and extremity dysfunction. He also has a special clinical interest in neck and lower back disc herniations, often combining chiropractic adjustments with computerized mechanical traction to improve pain relief, mobility, and function.

While many patients first visit because of pain, Dr. Betsill is passionate about helping them move beyond symptom relief. His goal is to help people improve functional movement, maintain spinal health, and support long-term wellness. He treats patients of all ages—including infants, children, teens, athletes, and pregnant women—and believes chiropractic care can play an important role in addressing not only spinal concerns, but also shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot discomfort.

Shortly before graduating in 2007, Dr. Betsill faced a personal health challenge that deeply shaped his philosophy of care. After multiple emergency room visits for dizziness, syncope, and chest pain, he began looking beyond symptoms alone. Through that experience, he came to better understand the effects of physical, chemical, and emotional stress on the body. By combining chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and proper nutrition, he restored his own health—an experience that continues to influence the way he cares for patients today.

Originally from northern Nevada and southern Idaho, Dr. Betsill grew up playing sports, with golf becoming a lifelong favorite. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Today, he and his wife and two sons enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not in the office, you’ll often find him on the course with the men’s club at Gresham Golf Course or staying active and fit with his family.
