How Spinal Decompression Therapy Promotes Faster Recovery for Herniated Discs in Gresham

Spinal Decompression Therapy Promotes Faster Recovery for Herniated Discs

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc bulges out, pressing on nearby nerves and causing pain, numbness, or weakness. Spinal decompression therapy offers a non-surgical, effective solution to promote healing and alleviate symptoms associated with herniated discs.

What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy for Herniated Discs?

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-invasive treatment designed to reduce the pressure on spinal discs, particularly in the case of a herniated disc. This therapy uses controlled traction to gently stretch the spine, creating negative pressure in the discs and allowing the herniated material to retract. The result is reduced pain, improved spinal health, and faster recovery for individuals suffering from herniated discs.

At Aspire Chiropractic, we use spinal decompression therapy as a key treatment for herniated discs, providing a safe and effective alternative to surgery. This method helps ease pressure on the discs and surrounding nerves, promoting healing without the need for invasive procedures.

How Does Spinal Decompression Therapy Work?

Spinal decompression therapy works by gently stretching the spine using a motorized traction table. The treatment session typically lasts between 15-30 minutes, during which the spine is carefully decompressed in a series of controlled movements.

The primary mechanism of spinal decompression is the creation of negative pressure within the discs. This negative pressure allows the herniated disc material to retract, relieving pressure on the affected nerve. Over time, this process can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and promote the healing of damaged discs.

Spinal decompression also improves circulation in the spinal area, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the injured discs. This increase in blood flow supports the body’s natural healing process and speeds up recovery.

Why Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression an Effective Treatment for Herniated Discs?

Non-surgical spinal decompression is particularly effective for herniated discs because it targets the root cause of the pain without the need for invasive surgery. Unlike traditional treatments like medication or injections, spinal decompression addresses the problem by focusing on the spine’s alignment and the pressure on the discs.

Some of the reasons non-surgical spinal decompression is highly effective include:

  • Pain Relief: By reducing pressure on the nerves and discs, spinal decompression therapy can significantly alleviate pain and discomfort caused by herniated discs.

  • Restores Disc Function: This therapy helps the discs regain their normal position, improving their function and preventing further injury.

  • Avoids Surgery: Spinal decompression therapy provides a safe, non-invasive alternative to surgical procedures that may require lengthy recovery times and carry inherent risks.

  • Improves Mobility: With the pressure relieved from the affected discs, patients often experience improved flexibility and a greater range of motion in the spine.

What Are the Benefits of Spinal Decompression Therapy for Herniated Discs?

Spinal decompression therapy offers numerous benefits for individuals suffering from herniated discs. These benefits include:

  1. Non-Surgical Treatment: For those who want to avoid the risks and recovery time associated with surgery, spinal decompression is a viable, non-invasive alternative.

  2. Long-Term Pain Relief: Many patients experience lasting relief from their herniated disc pain after a series of spinal decompression treatments, helping them return to normal activities.

  3. Enhanced Recovery: The therapy accelerates the healing of damaged spinal discs, promoting faster recovery and improved spinal health.

  4. Reduced Reliance on Medications: By addressing the root cause of the pain, spinal decompression can reduce the need for pain medications or injections, which only mask the symptoms rather than promote healing.

What to Expect During Spinal Decompression Therapy for Herniated Discs?

During spinal decompression therapy sessions at Aspire Chiropractic, you will be comfortably positioned on a specialized traction table. The chiropractor will adjust the settings to gently stretch and decompress your spine. The treatment is typically painless and non-invasive, though some patients may experience mild discomfort as the spine is adjusted.

The number of sessions needed depends on the severity of your herniated disc and your individual response to the treatment. Many patients experience relief after a few sessions, while others may require a longer series of treatments to achieve optimal results.

Your chiropractor will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your condition, ensuring that you receive the most effective care for your herniated disc.

Can Spinal Decompression Therapy Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Yes, spinal decompression therapy can be combined with other treatments to enhance its effectiveness. At Aspire Chiropractic, we often pair spinal decompression with chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, and physical rehabilitation exercises to address the entire musculoskeletal system. This combination helps improve spinal alignment, strengthen surrounding muscles, and promote overall recovery.

For some patients, additional treatments like posture correction or ergonomic advice may also be included to prevent future disc issues.

Is Spinal Decompression Therapy Safe for Herniated Discs?

Spinal decompression therapy is a safe and effective treatment for herniated discs when performed by a licensed chiropractor. The procedure is non-invasive and poses little to no risk when done correctly. However, spinal decompression may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, spinal fractures, or certain types of cancer. It’s essential to consult with a chiropractor before starting treatment to ensure it’s appropriate for your condition.

At Aspire Chiropractic, our experienced team will assess your condition thoroughly and determine if spinal decompression therapy is the right choice for you.

Dr. Mark Betsill

Dr. Mark Betsill is a dedicated chiropractor serving patients in Gresham with more than a decade of experience helping individuals move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health from Boise State University, where his interest in health and human performance first began to take shape.

After experiencing firsthand how chiropractic care helped him recover from an upper back injury that was affecting his golf game, Dr. Betsill discovered the path he wanted to pursue. He went on to attend Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.

Dr. Betsill focuses on helping patients recover from neck and back pain, sports injuries, postural stress, auto accident injuries, and workplace-related conditions. He uses gentle, effective techniques including manual adjustments, the Activator Method, and drop-table adjustments to address spinal misalignment and extremity dysfunction. He also has a special clinical interest in neck and lower back disc herniations, often combining chiropractic adjustments with computerized mechanical traction to improve pain relief, mobility, and function.

While many patients first visit because of pain, Dr. Betsill is passionate about helping them move beyond symptom relief. His goal is to help people improve functional movement, maintain spinal health, and support long-term wellness. He treats patients of all ages—including infants, children, teens, athletes, and pregnant women—and believes chiropractic care can play an important role in addressing not only spinal concerns, but also shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot discomfort.

Shortly before graduating in 2007, Dr. Betsill faced a personal health challenge that deeply shaped his philosophy of care. After multiple emergency room visits for dizziness, syncope, and chest pain, he began looking beyond symptoms alone. Through that experience, he came to better understand the effects of physical, chemical, and emotional stress on the body. By combining chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and proper nutrition, he restored his own health—an experience that continues to influence the way he cares for patients today.

Originally from northern Nevada and southern Idaho, Dr. Betsill grew up playing sports, with golf becoming a lifelong favorite. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Today, he and his wife and two sons enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not in the office, you’ll often find him on the course with the men’s club at Gresham Golf Course or staying active and fit with his family.
