Sciatica pain can significantly affect your daily life, making simple tasks like sitting or walking difficult. This type of pain, caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, can vary from a mild ache to severe, debilitating discomfort. Fortunately, chiropractic care offers a non-invasive solution for those suffering from sciatica. At Aspire Chiropractic in Gresham, OR, we specialize in using chiropractic adjustments to alleviate sciatica pain and improve overall spinal health.

Let’s explore how chiropractic adjustments can help you find relief from sciatica pain and why many Gresham residents are turning to chiropractic care for long-term pain management.

Understanding Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain typically originates from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the hips, and down each leg. The pain can be sharp, burning, or tingling, and often worsens when sitting or standing for long periods. The causes of sciatica can vary, but commonly include a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle imbalances that place pressure on the nerve.

How Chiropractic Adjustments Work for Sciatica Relief

Chiropractic care for sciatica pain is centered on realigning the spine to reduce nerve compression and improve overall spinal function. A chiropractic adjustment near Gresham, OR, involves using controlled force to manipulate the spine and other joints in the body, restoring proper alignment and relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Restoring Spinal Alignment

The primary goal of chiropractic adjustments for sciatica is to restore proper alignment to the spine. Misalignments, or subluxations, in the vertebrae can cause nerve compression, which often leads to sciatica pain. Through a chiropractic adjustment, these misalignments are gently corrected, reducing pressure on the sciatic nerve and promoting natural healing.

Improving Mobility and Flexibility

In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractors use various techniques to enhance mobility and flexibility in the affected areas. By increasing flexibility, chiropractic care helps reduce muscle tension and pressure around the sciatic nerve, which further contributes to pain relief.

Spinal Decompression Therapy for Sciatica

In some cases, chiropractic adjustments are combined with spinal decompression therapy to enhance the treatment of sciatica. This therapy involves gently stretching the spine to relieve pressure on the discs and nerves, helping alleviate pain and promote healing. This combination of treatments can be particularly effective for those suffering from herniated discs or degenerative disc disease, which are common causes of sciatica.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Sciatica

Chiropractic care offers a variety of benefits for those dealing with sciatica, including:

  • Non-invasive treatment: Chiropractic adjustments provide a safe, drug-free solution to sciatica pain without the need for invasive procedures or medications.

  • Long-term pain relief: By addressing the root cause of sciatica, chiropractic adjustments help provide lasting pain relief rather than masking symptoms temporarily.

  • Enhanced spinal health: Chiropractic care promotes overall spinal health, helping to prevent future episodes of sciatica by keeping the spine aligned and functioning optimally.

When to Seek Chiropractic Care for Sciatica

If you are experiencing sciatic pain that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter pain relievers or physical therapy, it may be time to consider chiropractic care. Early intervention can help prevent the condition from worsening and reduce the risk of chronic pain. If you’re unsure whether chiropractic care is right for you, a consultation with a chiropractor can help determine the best course of treatment for your specific situation.

At Aspire Chiropractic, we are dedicated to providing personalized care to those suffering from sciatica pain in Gresham, OR. Our team will assess your condition, discuss your symptoms, and develop a customized treatment plan designed to relieve your discomfort.

Dr. Mark Betsill

Dr. Mark Betsill is a dedicated chiropractor serving patients in Gresham with more than a decade of experience helping individuals move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health from Boise State University, where his interest in health and human performance first began to take shape.

After experiencing firsthand how chiropractic care helped him recover from an upper back injury that was affecting his golf game, Dr. Betsill discovered the path he wanted to pursue. He went on to attend Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.

Dr. Betsill focuses on helping patients recover from neck and back pain, sports injuries, postural stress, auto accident injuries, and workplace-related conditions. He uses gentle, effective techniques including manual adjustments, the Activator Method, and drop-table adjustments to address spinal misalignment and extremity dysfunction. He also has a special clinical interest in neck and lower back disc herniations, often combining chiropractic adjustments with computerized mechanical traction to improve pain relief, mobility, and function.

While many patients first visit because of pain, Dr. Betsill is passionate about helping them move beyond symptom relief. His goal is to help people improve functional movement, maintain spinal health, and support long-term wellness. He treats patients of all ages—including infants, children, teens, athletes, and pregnant women—and believes chiropractic care can play an important role in addressing not only spinal concerns, but also shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot discomfort.

Shortly before graduating in 2007, Dr. Betsill faced a personal health challenge that deeply shaped his philosophy of care. After multiple emergency room visits for dizziness, syncope, and chest pain, he began looking beyond symptoms alone. Through that experience, he came to better understand the effects of physical, chemical, and emotional stress on the body. By combining chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and proper nutrition, he restored his own health—an experience that continues to influence the way he cares for patients today.

Originally from northern Nevada and southern Idaho, Dr. Betsill grew up playing sports, with golf becoming a lifelong favorite. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Today, he and his wife and two sons enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not in the office, you’ll often find him on the course with the men’s club at Gresham Golf Course or staying active and fit with his family.
