Chiropractic Decompression Therapy: A Game-Changer for Outdoor Enthusiasts in Gresham

services img

Given the proximity to natural attractions like the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, and numerous parks, many Gresham locals are avid outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, biking, fishing, and camping are popular activities among residents, and the community often comes together for outdoor events and activities. However, the physical demands of these outdoor pursuits can take a toll on your body, particularly your back. Chronic pain, especially in the spine, is a common issue faced by those who regularly engage in outdoor sports. One of the most effective, non-invasive solutions for back pain and spinal health is chiropractic decompression therapy. This treatment can help outdoor enthusiasts in Gresham manage pain, improve flexibility, and enhance overall well-being. Let’s explore how chiropractic decompression therapy works and why it’s beneficial for those who love spending time outdoors.

What Is Chiropractic Decompression Therapy?

Chiropractic decompression therapy is a non-surgical treatment designed to alleviate pressure on the spine, specifically targeting the discs in the back. During this therapy, a chiropractor uses a specialized table that gently stretches the spine, creating a vacuum effect within the discs. This process helps to reduce pressure, promote healing, and increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the affected areas.

Chiropractic decompression therapy is especially helpful for individuals dealing with disc herniation, bulging discs, or sciatica, which are often aggravated by physical activity. This therapy promotes long-term healing by addressing the root causes of back pain rather than just masking the symptoms.

For outdoor enthusiasts in Gresham, regular decompression therapy can provide relief from the strain caused by physical activities, allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors without the burden of back pain.

How Outdoor Activities Contribute to Back Pain

Outdoor sports, while beneficial for fitness and overall health, can lead to a variety of back-related injuries. Whether it’s from repetitive motion, lifting heavy gear, or taking a fall during a hike or bike ride, these activities can place undue stress on the spine.

Common injuries among outdoor enthusiasts include:

  • Herniated or bulging discs: Repetitive bending, twisting, or carrying heavy loads can put pressure on spinal discs, leading to herniation.

  • Sciatica: A condition caused by the compression of the sciatic nerve, often resulting in pain, tingling, or numbness in the lower back and legs.

  • Muscle strain: Overexertion from hiking, biking, or running can lead to strained muscles in the back, which contributes to discomfort and limited movement.

By incorporating chiropractic decompression therapy into your routine, you can mitigate the effects of these injuries and keep your body in top shape for your outdoor adventures.

How Chiropractic Decompression Therapy Helps

Chiropractic decompression therapy targets the root causes of back pain, offering several benefits that help outdoor enthusiasts recover and stay active:

1. Pain Relief and Recovery

Chiropractic decompression therapy is particularly effective in providing relief from chronic back pain. By relieving pressure on the spinal discs, it promotes natural healing. This treatment helps alleviate the discomfort caused by herniated or bulging discs, often improving mobility and quality of life.

2. Increased Flexibility

For those who enjoy activities like hiking or cycling, flexibility is key. Decompression therapy helps by stretching the spine and improving its range of motion, making it easier to perform outdoor activities without restriction.

3. Prevention of Future Injuries

Chiropractic decompression therapy can strengthen the spine and surrounding muscles, reducing the likelihood of future injuries. By regularly visiting a chiropractor, you can help maintain proper spinal alignment and avoid strain from activities that may cause long-term damage.

4. Boosted Circulation and Oxygenation

Decompression therapy encourages the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the spinal discs, which aids in the healing process. This helps to reduce inflammation and speed up recovery, allowing you to return to your favorite outdoor activities more quickly.

When to Consider Chiropractic Care for Your Outdoor Lifestyle

While chiropractic decompression therapy is a great option for those suffering from chronic back pain or spinal issues, it can also benefit those who want to prevent injury and maintain a healthy spine. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast in Gresham, consider chiropractic care if you experience any of the following:

  • Persistent back pain after outdoor activities

  • Limited range of motion or stiffness in the back

  • Numbness, tingling, or pain radiating down your legs (sciatica)

  • Recurring injuries, such as muscle strains or sprains

By visiting a chiropractor and discussing your symptoms, you can determine if chiropractic decompression therapy is right for you.

Dr. Mark Betsill

Dr. Mark Betsill is a dedicated chiropractor serving patients in Gresham with more than a decade of experience helping individuals move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health from Boise State University, where his interest in health and human performance first began to take shape.

After experiencing firsthand how chiropractic care helped him recover from an upper back injury that was affecting his golf game, Dr. Betsill discovered the path he wanted to pursue. He went on to attend Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007.

Dr. Betsill focuses on helping patients recover from neck and back pain, sports injuries, postural stress, auto accident injuries, and workplace-related conditions. He uses gentle, effective techniques including manual adjustments, the Activator Method, and drop-table adjustments to address spinal misalignment and extremity dysfunction. He also has a special clinical interest in neck and lower back disc herniations, often combining chiropractic adjustments with computerized mechanical traction to improve pain relief, mobility, and function.

While many patients first visit because of pain, Dr. Betsill is passionate about helping them move beyond symptom relief. His goal is to help people improve functional movement, maintain spinal health, and support long-term wellness. He treats patients of all ages—including infants, children, teens, athletes, and pregnant women—and believes chiropractic care can play an important role in addressing not only spinal concerns, but also shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot discomfort.

Shortly before graduating in 2007, Dr. Betsill faced a personal health challenge that deeply shaped his philosophy of care. After multiple emergency room visits for dizziness, syncope, and chest pain, he began looking beyond symptoms alone. Through that experience, he came to better understand the effects of physical, chemical, and emotional stress on the body. By combining chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and proper nutrition, he restored his own health—an experience that continues to influence the way he cares for patients today.

Originally from northern Nevada and southern Idaho, Dr. Betsill grew up playing sports, with golf becoming a lifelong favorite. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Today, he and his wife and two sons enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not in the office, you’ll often find him on the course with the men’s club at Gresham Golf Course or staying active and fit with his family.
